Sweet Mona's Grand ReOpening, July 1
Contact: Mona Newbauer
Telephone: (360) 221-2728
Email: monalynn@whidbey.com
For Immediate Release
LANGLEY, Wash. – Island Angel Chocolates is delighted to announce its Grand Re-Opening as the new “Sweet Mona’s” on July 1, 2010, just in time for the July 4th holiday week end. Langley on Whidbey Island, a delightful destination with both week end and day trip guests, is the home of this beloved chocolate shop and cafe. With an expanded product line beyond its famous truffles, Sweet Mona’s will be serving warm breakfast items, pastries and other delicious baked goods. Continuing to expand its new breakfast and pastry offerings, the daily menu will feature delicious morning treats such as Liege Belgian waffles, classic Belgian waffles, homemade biscuit breakfast sandwiches, and other seasonal sweetness. With this expansion, Sweet Mona’s, welcomes PJ Pilgrim, an extremely talented baker. PJ has been the family cook and baker all her life. She has a passion for baking. Her Great Auntie taught her how to make bread, cinnamon rolls and pies at age 9. She has just completed a 9 month course in Portland at the Le Cordon Bleu School of Culinary Arts, Patisserie and Baking Diploma Program and has spent the last six weeks here through an externship in collaboration with the school. She has strong family ties to the island living with her family on their Greenbank family farm and desires share her passion for baking through this opportunity at Sweet Mona’s.
Mona Newbauer, the creative genius behind this bustling business enterprise and staple to Whidbey Island, is so excited to be fulfilling a dream to expand the shop and café line to include a more expansive patisserie, hence the change in name to “Sweet Mona’s.” As the owner shares with us, the idea for this shop began with my ability to create recipes for chocolates, but I have always enjoyed and had a vision to expand the shop beyond that idea to something so much more, a place for the local community, a “patisserie” that featured home baked items. And, with this new expansion, we are going to start opening earlier at 8:00 am in order to better serve the early breakfast and commuter crowd, as well as our island guests and tourists.”
Born from a love for life and all of its magical possibilities, the inception of Sweet Mona's developed from its owner's passion for chocolate and her uncanny ability to create delicious, enticing recipes. "Living the Sweet Life" captures the essence of this Whidbey Island chocolate shop and patisserie's exciting presence in the picturesque, seaside town of Langely, Washington. A graduate of Ecole Chocolat in Vancouver, BC, Mona continues to meet life's challenges with an open heart and keen eye. Always experimenting with new recipes and product ideas, this little jewel of a shop has expanded from its humble beginnings of selling its famously delicious handmade truffles at the local Farmers’ Markets to a bustling cafe that offers such staples as espressos, lattes, Italian sodas, gelato served in cups or handmade waffle cones, and patisserie. Busting out at the seams from its first little storefront to the current space the shop now occupies in the heart of this idyllic coastal town, all visitors and guests who stop by can't help but feel the contagious excitement that Mona and her shop exudes - her happiness for life, its mysteries (and discoveries along the way), as well as her unending devotion to offering the very best in handmade chocolates, gelato and pastries. Sweet Mona's prides itself on the quality of its customer service and staff. With an extensive product line of chocolates that includes handmade truffles, caramels (both plain and sea salt), toffees and brittles, fudge, pecan clusters, and its very own seafoam, including many other uniquely crafted chocolates and sweets, the newly expanded bakery and pastry line will offer a variety of items depending on seasonal fruits and ingredients, including homemade preserves and jams.

Brackenwood Gallery presents "Patterns" in July
Brackenwood Gallery will host famed sculptor Georgia Gerber and her daughter, painter Laura Hudson, for the month of July. The show’s theme is “Patterns”. Patterns abound. Whether they are designs from nature, chance configurations of objects, or fanciful designs from the artist’s imagination, they decorate our lives.
Laura Hudson, currently pursuing an MFA degree at Maryland Institute College of Art, enjoys focusing on the mundane moments that make up our days. Girls dressing, ducks and chickens waddling are just some of the original subjects she focuses on. Portraying these events, Laura “dresses” them up by incorporating bright colors and patterns. The result, often quirky and zingy, gives her work a contemporary look and feel.
Most people in the Northwest are familiar with Georgia Gerber’s public bronze sculptures such as “Rachel” the pig at Pike Place Market. Georgia calls Whidbey home, and we are thrilled to present her new work for this Pattern show. “I often use repetition as a tool in my sculpting, but my daughter Laura’s flamboyant foray into the use of pattern in her painting has been an inspiration,” says Gerber. Georgia often includes pattern elements in her work, but she has incorporated both intricate visual patterns as well as behavioral patterns into these sculptures. The playful image of three foxes sitting in a row is visually pleasing, but also suggests a rhythm that feels natural and timeless.
Please join the artists for the opening reception and First Sat. Art Walk in Langley on July 3, 2010, from 5-7 PM at Brackenwood Gallery. The gallery is open 11-5PM Wed. thru Mon. for the “Patterns” show throughout the month of July.

The 35th Choochokam Festival of the Arts, July 10-11
Runs through Sunday, July 11th, 2010
Wondering what the word "Choochokam" means? Choochokam is a Hopi word which roughly translates as "a Gathering of Stars." Our "stars," a diverse group of several hundred local artists, inspired by the early organizers to create what we now know as The Choochokam Festival of the Arts.
The Festival began as a dream. Could we gather our community's artists together, once a year, for a celebration in downtown Langley? The original festivals were sponsored by the Island Arts Council to support their scholarship program for local young artists.
During the 35 years of its existence, the Choochokam Festival has undergone numerous changes.
In 2007, the nonprofit organization, Choochokam Arts, was created. Our mission is to create an organization that reflects the richness of Langley's artistic community and encourages participation in this local celebration.
Today, the festival is under the nonprofit umbrella of the Langley Chamber of Commerce.
Choochokam Arts is infused with energy by its valued, hard-working volunteers. With the help of our partner, the Whidbey Island Arts Council, we hope to host arts programs throughout the year on South Whidbey Island.
The 2010 Choochokam Arts Festival is directed by the very talented Tom Moore & Celia Black. For information, click here.
